My Top picks of AI Tools – Part 1
February 11, 2023Being an entrepreneur for the first 4 years of my professional life, I used to believe that you can only learn things with practical experience. Didn’t give much credit to degrees, bookish knowledge, frameworks, concepts, etc.
What I didn’t understand at the time was that the value of the MBA depends on a number of factors such as an individual’s career goals, the quality of the program, and the school’s reputation.
I realized this when my wife Shruti Lal graduated from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (among the top 3 business schools in India, FT ranked 47 globally in 2019) with an MBA degree in 2019. I could see a huge change in her thought process as well as her approach to problem-solving which changed my perspective toward this degree.
After a lot of push from her, I decided to hop onto this train of MBA in 2020 right in the middle of Covid-19. I won’t say I had an amazing experience at the University of Edinburgh Business School as a significant portion of my classes were online but I’d undeniably praise the program structure and diversity in the batch. Personally, one of my biggest achievements was co-writing this report for a Scottish Think Tank which helped me a lot in developing critical thinking, learning data analysis, building some Microsoft Excel expertise, and most importantly putting things into perspective. Honestly, I couldn’t even think of writing a one-pager before my MBA and here I was writing a 19-page report providing recommendations to the Scottish government on graduate employment opportunities. So yeah this was the biggest learning for me from this whole experience.
Advice to fellow MBA aspirants – An MBA can help you gain advanced knowledge and skills in areas such as finance, accounting, report writing, and maybe a piece or two about management (pun intended on the last part), which are valuable in the professional world. However, it’s important to carefully consider the cost and time investment required to earn an MBA and weigh it against the expected benefits. Ultimately, whether an MBA is a good degree or not depends on the individual and their specific circumstances. Ping me if you need any help in making the right decision and I might be able to share my two cents.
